Upcoming Events Foreign Policy and Security Policy in Israel - Which has Primacy?
February 19, 2011
Israel's foreign policy has faced a number of challenges throughout the history of the state. The feeling of being under constant existential threat has resulted in a situation in which foreign policy goals have been dependent upon security assessments. This situation has resulted in a dynamic in which political decision-makers lack independence from the security establishment, leading to the question: does Israel have a foreign policy, or only a security policy? Throughout Israel's history, the Foreign Ministry has been pushed aside to a secondary role in determining foreign policy, as the security establishment has often taken a leading role in this field.
The book published recently by Dov Ben Meir, "Foreign Policy: History, Goals, and Mission", offers a unique historical perspective dealing with some of these issues. With this in mind, the S. Daniel Abraham Center for Strategic Dialogue at Netanya Academic College proposes holding an afternoon conference dealing with Israel's foreign policy, with respect to its security policy.
The conference program will be published in the coming days.
